40 Days of Prayer - 2015
Day 20 - October 2

Prayer is Relationship with God
By Dave Allen

Have you ever asked or maybe thought, “Why don’t I get what I pray for? When I was little I once prayed for a lost quarter. Another time I prayed for a lost watch. God answered those prayers. When I was little, I knew He answered prayer! And that is just what the Bible teaches us – to pray and he will answer. In John 16:23, 24 Jesus said to his disciples: “I tell you the truth, my Father will give you whatever you ask in my name.”

But when I became older, a lot of my specific prayers were not answered. When our son Scott was seven years old he sneezed and cut the top of his nose on the bathroom counter. While he was getting stitches, the lid of a shaker bottle with sulfa powder came off and spilled the entire bottle of sulfa on his face. He turned out to be allergic to it. The swelling and itching of the reaction made him so miserable he couldn’t sleep for several nights. He told me, “Daddy, I’ve prayed that God would take this away.” As we saw his misery we too had prayed that prayer. And I would have gladly traded him places. I told God that, too. What parent hasn’t wanted to trade places with our children when they are really sick and suffering? I did not get the immediate answer I hoped and prayed for. It took several days for the reaction to go away. Several miserable days.

And yet the Bible tells us to ask, and it shall be given to us. I still believe in prayer. I still believe that God answers prayer! But I have learned that there is no magic formula that will always get you what you ask for in prayer. Prayer is more about a relationship between God and me, than about getting what I ask Him for from my prayer list. Prayer is about learning to trust even when you don’t get the answers you want.

Joni Erickson once said that God did not as much answer her prayers of why He allowed her to be paralyzed but instead He gave Himself to her. In other words she developed a deeper relationship, a relationship of trust no matter what. Real faith, mature faith, is not having faith when you pray and get an answer, but trusting God even when you prayed and didn’t get an answer!

"... I tell you the truth, my Father will give you anything you ask for in my name.”
John 16:23 NCV

Ask God for a deepening of your own relationship with God that will lead you to trust Him no matter what.
